Penn’s Outdoors

I have no fishing report from this weekend. I needed a break.  I haven’t felt like I’ve been fishing well.  No, real big fish this year, and I have been trouble being in the zone when on the water.  There are a lot of good excuses, but I decided that I should spend the weekend regrouping a bit and getting some things done around the house.

Well, I didn’t get as much done as I wanted to, but I did get a few things done.   I am getting back into archery hunting this year.  I actually made good progress on this end. I spent a few hours Saturday doing some scouting for the upcoming deer season.  I saw several deer which got me stoked for the upcoming season. 

On Sunday, I went to a family picnic and got permission from my uncle to hunt his small piece of property in Lancaster County.  I snuck away from the picnic for a bit and scouted the little area.  It was clear the deer were bedding in one area.  But, the best trees looked to be really close to his neighbor’s safety zone.  The one tree where I thought I could be out of safety zones and still within shooting distance of the major trails put me right up a long a corn field. 

When I got back to the picnic, I asked my uncle if the farmer would mind if I shot into the corn field.  My uncle reminded me that he owned the entire corn field along with another wood plot well away from his neighbor’s property.  I had forgotten that he owned this property.  It got me excited to explore further.  Though, I didn’t dare risk marital harmony by sneaking away again.  This should prove to be a good secondary area to hunt this fall.

The biggest news may be that I am about to buy a bow. I visited some yard sales with not so hot bows for cheap prices.  I don’t have the money to buy something new right now.  So, I was scouring the web for a deal.  I think that I found one.  Since I haven’t closed the deal yet, I am going to hold off on details, but I hopefully can tell you about my “new to me” bow soon.

I booked a fishing trip for my two boys and I when we take the family vacation to North Myrtle Beach.  I’m not taking a surf rod as it distracts me too much from my family.  I’ve also not read the best reviews on the surf fishing from North Myrtle Beach.  So, we are going to spend a day and take a head boat out to the Gulf Stream. I’ll be writing more about it in my fishing travel post on Wednesday.

I also bought my general hunting license and archery stamp online.

Finally, I also did some organizing of my fishing gear.  Next week, I am headed out to Memorial Lake in Lebanon County.  This is a close lake to my home, and I feel that I should get to know it since it is so convenient.

I guess this weekend was more productive than I thought.  I think it was smart to take a weekend off from fishing but I am ready to get out next weekend.  Hope you had a great weekend!
