Jim Collins Discusses Deer Management and Hunting License Sales in PA

Jim Collins gets it.  He understands that the arguments around deer management are not about how how many deer we see on a day in the woods but about the future of hunting in Pennsylvania.

While he states a number of reasons for the decreasing number of hunters in PA a part from anything that the Game Commission has control over, he hits the nail on the head with this quote,

I do believe that the Pennsylvania Game Commission MUST take another look at their deer management program. There is no doubt that we have fewer deer in Pennsylvania. I do not have any answers on this subject. I do know that folks will not play a game of basketball or baseball, without the ball. Deer hunters will not continue to participate in our sport without huntable populations of deer.

Amen Jim.  There is clearly a lot to be done to promote our sport but for us to stand a chance a balanced huntable deer population in Penn’s Woods is a necessity.

what is the source of the decline of the deer population? I know, in the area my dad lives in, they were hit by that virus that wiped out a large portion of the population, but I was not sure if that was true in other parts of the state.

I really thought the antler restrictions was working to balance the herd. I believe it led to more does being killed, and has allowed more bucks to grow to maturity. I know we have been seeing some nice bucks in his area…but I don’t know how that translates statewide.

Kris, thanks for the comment. I think your comment deserves a more thorough response than I can put in a comment. I am working on a post that will be up in a couple of weeks about the State of the PA whitetail.

The source of the decline in most areas is FAR too many doe tags the last few/several years. The gameless commission catering to the timber industry and the goofball audubon society who are demanding rock bottom deer numbers so they dont eat any of their coveted wildflowers.
