Trip to Lily Lake in Luzerne County

Friday, we headed out to try for some northern pike at Lily Lake.  We figured that we were going a bit late in the season but hoped to find at least a couple.

The morning started off great with three fish in the first 20 minutes, just not pike.  Moments after launching, my fishing partner caught two trout and a small bass.  What a start to the day!  We continued to explore the lake with eager anticipation.  Four hours later, our anticipation was gone as we didn’t have another hit around the rest of the lake.

About 11AM, we had our last hit of the day and it was the one we were after.  A quality northern pike fell for the spinner of my fishing partner.  But we had a slight problem.  He had switched over to his light action rod with 4 pound test trying to catch a few more trout for the day.  This pike buried himself in the thick weed growth and was unmovable on the 4 pound test.  After about a minute, the lure popped out.  I only got one look at the pike and it appeared to be in the upper 20″ range.

I am hoping to revisit Lily Lake in the fall and spring to chase some more Northerns.

I understand Lily also has some good bass fishing.  This may be but other than one fish, we didn’t see too much evidence of this.  There were a number of people targeting trout.

Sounds like a good time, anyhow. I reckon 4 lb. test wasn’t made for haulin’ fish out of the weeds!
