Tuesday’s Odds and Ends for July 1, 2008
Want to Go to Minnesota?
Yes, I do. Mille Lacs is a great fishing trip destination for you walleye fishermen. Actually, its a great multi-species fishing trip destination. And now smallmouth bass have become part of its reputation.
I threw tube jigs onto a rock pile that rose to 12 feet deep from 18. The intent still was to entice a smallmouth bass to open its smallmouth mouth. These fish have shown up in Mille Lacs in the last decade or so in sizes so large they require fishing-report stenographers to learn new strokes on their keyboards. Five pounds. Twenty-two inches.
Dennis Anderson has an excellent article for anyone considering going that direction.
Lake Gaston on the Virginia and North Carolina Border
I was there a long time ago. We had a fun trip but didn’t catch many fish. Had a couple of big ones on that weren’t landed. Lake Gaston is a fun place for a family trip.
Fishing. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries — and local fishermen — brag about the lake’s largemouth bass population. Fishermen can also find striped bass, walleyes, channel catfish, blue catfish, chain pickerel and bluegill. A Virginia fishing license is legal lakewide. Licenses are not required for children under 15 years old.
Pennsylvania Elk Hunting
No rifles in this article but an interesting article on tracking PA’s elk herd.
Smallmouth Bass Assessment Underway on West Branch of Susquehanna
Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is reminding anglers to report tagged smallmouth bass in order to help the agency with a population assessment on a section of the lower West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
The commission is currently conducting the assessment and an angler survey on about seven miles of the lower West Branch of the Susquehanna River from the vicinity of Muncy downstream to Montgomery, Lycoming County.
The full release is on the PFBC site.
Licenses Online
I got my 2008 PA hunting license and archery stamp online. Its not hard to do at all. Took me less than 5 minutes.
